🥘 Ingredients

To every 1-1/2 pint of good ale allow 1 bottle of ginger beer.

👨‍🍳 Method

For this beverage the ginger beer must be in an effervescing state, and the beer not in the least turned or sour. Mix them together, and drink immediately. The draught is refreshing and wholesome, as the ginger corrects the action of the beer. It does not deteriorate by standing a little, but, of course, is better when taken fresh. FOR A SUMMER DRAUGHT.

A charming trip down culinary memory lane

This week, I tried my hand at a Victorian era "summer draught" from Mrs. Beeton's classic cookbook. I was initially skeptical about the combination of ale and ginger beer, but I was intrigued by the promise of a "refreshing and wholesome" beverage. I found that the key to this drink's success is indeed the effervescence of the ginger beer, which I hadn't expected to make such a difference. The fizzy ginger beer cuts through the ale's richness, creating a surprisingly light and invigorating drink. It's like a cross between a shandy and a ginger beer cocktail, with a delightful kick of ginger heat. I imagine this drink would be a hit with anyone looking to elevate their weekday beverage routine. It's simple to prepare, and the combination of ale and ginger beer is surprisingly more-ish. I enjoyed it most on a hot afternoon, sitting in the garden. I will be making this again, perhaps with a splash of lime juice for an extra zing.
