🥘 Ingredients

Batter, 8 slices of bread and butter, 3 or 4 tablespoonfuls of jam.

👨‍🍳 Method

Make a batter, the same as for apple fritters No. 1393; cut some slices of bread and butter, not very thick; spread half of them with any jam that may he preferred, and cover with the other slices; slightly press them together, and cut them out in square, long, or round pieces. Dip them in the batter, and fry in boiling lard for about 10 minutes; drain them before the fire on a piece of blotting-paper or cloth. Dish them, sprinkle over sifted sugar, and serve.

This one hit different

I tried making Bread-and-Butter Fritters this week, and I must say, it was a delightful trip down memory lane. The process was simple enough, and I found that the batter, though similar to apple fritters, had a unique consistency that made it perfect for coating the bread. The real surprise came when I took my first bite— the bread inside was beautifully soft and warm, with the jam oozing out in the most satisfying way. It was like a grown-up version of a jam sandwich, elevated to a whole new level of comfort. This recipe is perfect for anyone who loves a good comfort food. I found it to be a great way to use up some slightly stale bread, and the process of making it was strangely soothing. I can see myself making these on a chilly evening, with a cup of tea by my side. The fritters were best enjoyed fresh out of the pan, with the sugar sprinkled on top adding a nice crunch. I'll definitely be making these again, perhaps with different types of jam to mix things up.
