🥘 Ingredients

1 oz. of gum-tragacanth, 1/4 pint of cold water, 3 pennyworth of essence of almonds, 2 teaspoonfuls of old rum.

👨‍🍳 Method

Put the gum-tragacanth into a wide-mouthed bottle with the cold water; let it stand till dissolved, then stir into it the essence of almonds; let it remain for an hour or two, when pour the rum on the top. This should make the stock bottle, and when any is required for use, it is merely necessary to dilute it with a little cold water until the desired consistency is obtained, and to keep it in a small bottle, well corked, for use. This bandoline, instead of injuring the hair, as many other kinds often do, improves it, by increasing its growth, and making it always smooth and glossy. An excellent Pomatum.

A lesson in doing more with less

I tried my hand at making this vintage bandoline recipe, curious about the alchemy of ingredients. I found the gum-tragacanth to be a fascinating thickening agent, transforming the mixture into a glossy, gel-like substance over a couple of hours. The almond essence added a delightful fragrance, but the real surprise was the rum — it didn't just add warmth but also acted as a preservative, ensuring the mixture stayed fresh in its little bottle. This concoction would be a hit with anyone who appreciates the art of old-fashioned hair care, or perhaps a historical reenactor looking to complete their Victorian ensemble. The process was simple enough for a weeknight experiment, and the result was a smooth, shiny pomatum that left my hair feeling nourished. I'll be keeping this recipe in my vintage beauty arsenal, ready to impress with my Victorian hairdo at the next costume party.
