Every book in our catalog carries an editorial rating from 61 to 95. It is not an average of anonymous stars — it is a considered verdict. Here's exactly how it is built.
The five components
Editorial reading (40%) — our team reads or closely reviews every book: quality of the text and translation, structure, rigor of sources, and whether it delivers what its tradition demands of it.
Significance to the craft (20%) — definitive works on a technique, the first book to codify a regional cuisine, and titles cooks still reach for decades later receive weight that passing trend books do not.
Reader reception (15%) — we aggregate ratings from Goodreads and specialist communities, weighted for review quality rather than raw volume.
Editions history (15%) — books that stay in print and get re-editions decade after decade earn a bonus. Longevity is the tradition's own vote.
Cultural footprint (10%) — academic citations, influence on later authors, presence in curricula and scholarly bibliographies.
Reading the scale
90–95 · Masterworks — books that defined or redefined their tradition. We mark them with a laurel.
80–89 · Essential — excellent texts, confidently recommended; strong in scholarship or practice.
70–79 · Solid — a good book of its kind. Not a revelation, but time well spent.
61–69 · For its audience — has its readers, though a demanding one may find it average.
Our independence rules
- Publishers do not pay us for positive reviews. No exceptions.
- Even books rated 90+ have weaknesses — and we write about them.
- If we make a factual error, we correct it openly, not silently.
- The initial rating is set by the Cookbook Shelf editors and refined as reader reviews accumulate.
