🍽 Serves
Allow 1/2 oz

🥘 Ingredients

Allow 1/2 oz. of chocolate to each person; to every oz. allow 1/2 pint of water, 1/2 pint of milk.

👨‍🍳 Method

Make the milk-and-water hot; scrape the chocolate into it, and stir the mixture constantly and quickly until the chocolate is dissolved; bring it to the boiling-point, stir it well, and serve directly with white sugar. Chocolate prepared with in a mill, as shown in the engraving, is made by putting in the scraped chocolate, pouring over it the boiling milk-and-water, and milling it over the fire until hot and frothy.

A charming trip down culinary memory lane

I tried my hand at Mrs. Beeton's "To Make Chocolate," intrigued by the vintage charm and simplicity of the instructions. I was struck by how little the process has changed—it's essentially a fancy hot chocolate. I found the method surprisingly satisfying; the constant stirring was almost meditative, and the result was a rich, velvety drink that was far more decadent than I expected from such basic ingredients. The real delight came when I tried it with a touch of vanilla extract, a modern twist that Mrs. Beeton couldn't have imagined. It elevated the drink to another level, making it perfect for a cozy evening in. This recipe is ideal for the comfort-seeker looking to unwind after a long day. Just remember, the key to success is patience and a good whisk.
